studioMDA designed an interactive lounge using digital fabricating technologies for Audi at the Westfield Garden State Plaza in New Jersey. Based upon the project brief, certain aspects of customer engagement, traffic flows and sensitivity to storefronts had to be addressed, along with providing visual merchandising and seating. In response to the traffic flows of the shopping center, studioMDA intensively studied the pedestrian flow through and around the proposed location of the lounge. Taking into account pedestrian sight lines and visual connections, an abstracted form was created by applying these movement forces to the space. The result of the study was for the lounge to allow movement form the ‘island’, carved out of the forces of shopping movement, the lounge acts as an oasis in a mass of movement. The seating area was constructed from fabricated ribs that were applied an epoxy finish to create the continuous, smooth surface, interactive monitors have been designed in to the form of the seating element as part of the interactive merchandising of the lounge.
