studioMDA was selected by the Westfield Group, one of the world’s largest shopping center developers, to conceptualize and design Holiday decorations for the 21st Century. Traditional holiday decorations have become historicized and many are kitsch, the design intent for this project was to create large, abstract decorations that are derived from their traditional counterparts yet retain a visual connection to the conventional. Using 3D fabrication technology and a material palette of differing metals, we were able to design robust, large-scale sculptural elements. The study of material application typology was pivotal in the design of the decorations.
